Top 5 Web Design Dos and Don’ts

The field of web design, once something of a cottage industry, has become a major money-maker for marketing firms that create websites for a wide variety of business clients. And whether you’re looking to enter this creative field or you’re simply a business owner trying to get a handle on your online portal, it’s important to remember that you’re not reinventing the wheel here. There are tons of successful sites across every industry that you can turn to for samples of how to do design right, not to mention plenty of books, tutorials, design programs, and other resources meant to help you get it right. But if you’re looking for a few tips pertaining to well-known issues in web design, here are just a few dos and don’ts that you’ll certainly want to take to heart.

  1. DO: Understand the importance of format. The layout and design of your website should be unique, mirroring the real-world branding that you’ve already got in place. However, you need to be careful not to get overly creative when it comes to the nuts and bolt of your site design. Formats exist for a number of reasons, but the most important is that they are often the best results of trial and error. So rather than doing it your own way with a bizarre and organic layout of boxes that will only confuse visitors, stick to simple (or even complex) arrangements that have been honed to perfection for you.
  2. DON’T: Go crazy with ads. It can be tempting to take the revenue provided by other companies seeking to place advertisements on your website, but consider how you might feel when confronted by a host of irrelevant, annoying, and/or persistent ads for items that have nothing to do with the website you’re visiting. This is how visitors to your site might feel and they’re not likely to come back after that kind of experience. So limit the number of ads on your site, keep them inconspicuous, and make sure they’re related to whatever it is you’re offering.
  3. DO: Adopt a user-friendly attitude. The modern consumer public can kindly be described with the phrase “short attention-span theater”. This means you have one shot to grab their attention and get them moving through your site. If they have too much trouble figuring out what they’re looking at and how to navigate, you’ve lost them. So keep it simple, follow standard formatting (like providing a navigation bar at the top of the page), and try not to overload your visitors with unnecessary information and images.
  4. DON’T: Overdo it with text. The internet is a visual medium. While you can certainly push a lot of information through textual content, you might want to consider more visually appealing options like infographics and videos. Visitors are likely to be more impressed with such offerings than blocks of text that remind them of their high-school homework.
  5. DO: Engage visitors. The best way to get visitors hooked is to give them the opportunity to interact, whether that means signing a guestbook (which will give you their contact info), taking a poll, entering a giveaway contest, or commenting on content.
