5 SEO Tips and Techniques for Newbies

Search engine optimization is an essential part of existing on the web, especially for businesses and e-commerce sites. If your website is not optimized, it may as well not exist. Many newcomers to the concept of SEO have a hard time grasping some of the basic facets of what it means to “optimize” a site for the web. How do you optimize a website, anyhow? Well, one crucial thing to keep in mind is that search engine optimization isn’t a singular venture – it is a multifaceted undertaking. Basically, there are many steps and processes and there is no easy SEO solution. Here are five SEO tips and techniques for newbies.

  1. Do not crowd keywords. It is important to understand the fundamental tenets of SEO. For instance, keyword stuffing is looked down upon, especially by Google. The search engine will penalize your site for overstuffing keywords. So, make sure that you keep your keyword density to a minimum. In most cases, there is no reason to go past 4% density. This means that you shouldn’t add more than a certain number of keywords within a paragraph or word block.
  2. Stay relevant. Another important aspect of SEO is relevancy. Relevancy is measured like gold when it comes to search engines. If a site doesn’t have relevant content, it may find itself further and further back in the ether of search engine pages. So, make sure that you use terms and keywords that are trending on the web. You can usually find these words by doing research online. You can also stay up to date with popular culture, news and more. Social media is also a great arena to mine relevant and trending topics.
  3. Make sure that links are active. Links are everything when it comes to SEO and they can be a powerful tool to optimize a website. However, if you are going into an SEO project with the intention of adding new hyperlinks, but don’t remove the old ones, it is a little bit like throwing good links after bad. Basically, all those old, broken links can hurt a certain website in the rankings. So, make sure to remove these links before you move on with adding new ones.
  4. Use analytical software. It will be a challenge to master SEO without Google Analytics, because having a complete analytical interface will be critical to know if your SEO plan is working. So, make sure that you implement Google Analytics into the website you are optimizing. It will help you measure bounce rates and it will help you determine what content is the most effective.
  5. Make sure that your site is fast and doesn’t have any heavy script languages. There was a period where website design was in a tug of war between the older flash-based platforms and newer, non-flash based platforms, but it was effecting the aesthetics of websites. Now, however, there are light, clean website platforms that are quick to load and are great for starting an SEO campaign – they are also aesthetically pleasing. In the end, the faster your site it, the more optimized it will be.
